FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about switching to a modern digital accountant.
What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?

Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s initiative to move all tax record-keeping and submissions to digital platforms. For VAT-registered businesses, MTD for VAT has been mandatory since 2019. From April 2026, MTD for Income Tax applies to self-employed people and landlords earning over £50,000 — requiring quarterly digital submissions instead of a single annual self-assessment return. The £30,000 threshold follows in April 2027.

What are the penalties for missing MTD deadlines?

HMRC uses a points-based penalty system for late MTD submissions. Each missed quarterly deadline earns a penalty point. Once you reach the threshold (four points for quarterly filers), HMRC issues a £200 financial penalty. Additional penalties apply for continued non-compliance. Our compliance service ensures you never accumulate points.

Do I need to register for VAT?

You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any 12-month rolling period (2024/25 threshold). You can also register voluntarily below this threshold, which can be beneficial if you sell to VAT-registered businesses. Once registered, you must file VAT returns (usually quarterly) and keep digital VAT records under MTD for VAT.

What is Corporation Tax and when is it due?

Corporation Tax is the tax a limited company pays on its profits. The current main rate is 25% for profits over £250,000, with a small profits rate of 19% for profits under £50,000 (with marginal relief between these thresholds). Your Corporation Tax return (CT600) is due 12 months after your accounting period end, but payment is due 9 months and 1 day after period end. We manage both deadlines.

What is a confirmation statement?

A confirmation statement (formerly the annual return) is a yearly filing to Companies House confirming that your company’s registered details are correct — directors, shareholders, registered address, and SIC codes. It must be filed within 14 days of the review date or HMRC can strike the company off the register. We file this automatically for all limited company clients.
