FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about switching to a modern digital accountant.
What is digital bookkeeping?

Digital bookkeeping is the process of recording and managing your business’s financial transactions using cloud-based software instead of manual spreadsheets or paper ledgers. Bank feeds import transactions automatically, receipts are captured via app, and your records are reconciled in real time. At TDA, all bookkeeping is done through cloud platforms such as Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent.

How often are my books updated?

Your bank feed reconciles automatically every day. Your bookkeeper reviews, categorises, and finalises transactions weekly. Monthly management accounts are prepared within the first week of the following month.

What accounting software do you use?

We work with Xero, QuickBooks, and FreeAgent — the three most widely used cloud accounting platforms in the UK. If you already use one of these, we can work within your existing account. If you’re starting fresh, we’ll recommend the best fit for your business type and set it up for you.

What is the difference between bookkeeping and accounting?

Bookkeeping is the ongoing recording of financial transactions. Such as income, expenses, bank reconciliation, and VAT records. Accounting takes those records and applies analysis, tax planning, and year-end compliance. At TDA, bookkeeping and accounting work together in one integrated service. Your bookkeeper keeps the records current, and your accountant uses those records for tax planning and compliance.

Do I need to switch to Making Tax Digital for bookkeeping?

If you’re VAT-registered, you are already required to keep digital VAT records and submit through MTD-compatible software. If you’re self-employed or a landlord earning over £50,000, MTD for Income Tax applies from April 2026, which requires quarterly digital submissions. Our bookkeeping service is fully MTD compliant for both.
